Weight loss surgery or Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure performed on obese persons for losing weight. There are different types of weight loss surgeries according to the conditions and needs of the various types of individuals. The National Institute of Health (U.S.) recommends weight loss surgeries for people who have a BMI (Body Mass Index)of 40 or greater. Recent studies have shown that weight loss surgery can also be suitable for people having BMI 35 to 40 and for those having BMI 30-35 in the case of associated complications with it.

Types of WL Surgeries:

Below are seven types of weight loss surgeries. Not every surgery is fit for everyone. Some medicines may prove miraculous for someone whereas the same surgery may not be of any use to another person.

1 Gastric Sleeve ·         In this procedure, the stomach size is decreased to 15% of the original size. A portion of the stomach along the curvature is surgically removed resulting in a sleeve-like structure of the stomach.

·         It takes 1-2 hours to complete the surgery.

·         It is not a reversible procedure.

2 Gastric Bypass ·         This is a surgical procedure in which the stomach is divided into an upper small pouch and lower large bag called remnant pouch and then small intestine is connected to both the pouches.

·         Mostly it is a laparoscopic procedure which results in quick healing.

·         It is a nonreversible process.

3 Gastric Balloon ·         Gastric Balloon is an inflatable type of device that is inserted into the patient’s stomach and inflated there.It decreases the space inside the stomach and thus leading to weight loss.

·         It is for those people who wish to have weight loss but exercise and diet have failed and they don’t want to undergo surgery.

·         It is a reversible process.

4 Duodenal Switch ·         This is also known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS).

·         It is also known as Gastric reduction duodenal switch (GRDS)

·         It is a combination of the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery.

·         It is recommended in severe cases of morbidity.

·         It is a nonreversible procedure.

5 LAP-BAND® ·         It is a silicone band that is placed around the upper part of the stomach to restrict its size.Thus the patient eats less or feels full quickly.

·         It is a laparoscopic surgery.

·         It is a reversible procedure.

6 vBloc Therapy ·         vBloc is a device that is placed under the skin below the rib cage. It controls the feeling of hunger.

·         The device stops a sense of longing for some time of the day by stimulating the vagal nerve thus leading to weight loss.

·         It is a reversible procedure.

7 AspireAssist ·         It is a small tube-like structure that is inserted into a patient’s stomach and empties some of its contents before the calories are absorbed into the body.

·         It is a reversible procedure.


Indications of Weight loss surgery:

  • BMI 40 and more.
  • Cheap BMI along with complications like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, heart disease, etc.
  • Unsuccessful in losing weight by other methods like diet restriction and exercise.
  • The patient fully understands the risks of the surgery.
